Helena Hettema, celebrated singer, songwriter and cabaret artist, recipient of the SABC 2 Geraas Award for Best Female Vocalist for her CD, Divided Heart, the Vonk – second best album of the year, twice SAMA (SA Music Award)nominee and Laureatus of the University of Pretoria, pays tribute to 100 years of Piaf and to other French greats at the Atterbury Theatre, Pretoria on 5 August 2015. Her show features tracks from her CD, Spirit of Piaf and other great French Legends when she celebrates 100 years since the birth of Piaf in December 1915.
Accompanied by the world acclaimed accordionist, Sergio Zampolli and the talented pianist, Marelize Koch, Helena conjures up the era in Paris and elsewhere with much-loved songs of the Little Sparrow, as Edith was dubbed by her fans. She also sings favourites of other French greats such as Jacques Brel , Charles Aznavour, Mireille Matthieu and Gilbert Becaud.
Helena has been acclaimed for her French renditions of the music of Piaf and Brel, among others on two occasions performing with the Cape |Town Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductors Gerhard Korsten and Alan Stephenson.
Singer, songwriter, Eugene Vermaak will also feature as guest artist in a duet with Helena of one of Jacques Brel’s best-loved compositions, If we only have love.
Another highlight of this show is the dancing of classical ballerina, Suranel van den Berg who graduated with honours at the Royal Academy of Dance (RADA) in London and formerly a member of CAPAB’s Corps de Ballet.
Helena also celebrates the Sony BMG’s re-release by popular demand of her double French album, Spirit of Piaf and other great French legends as two separate CDs.
